Guide

How to start a watch collection

A collection is a thesis you wear. Five steps, six persona-led starter paths, and the beginner mistakes to skip — from a Dubai watch house that's been doing this since 1990.

1 — Pick a thesis, not a brand

Most beginner collections fail because they chase brand names. Start with a thesis instead: 'watches I'd wear hiking,' 'watches that age beautifully,' 'one watch per decade of my life.' A thesis tells you what to buy AND what to skip.

2 — Buy the first watch you'll actually wear

Your first watch sets the rhythm. Pick one you reach for on a regular Tuesday — not the grail you wear twice a year. If it's not on your wrist 5+ days a week in month one, the collection won't compound.

3 — Wait. Then add a contrast piece

Resist the second-purchase impulse for at least three months. Then add ONE piece that does something the first one can't: dressier, sportier, smaller, a totally different colour. Two well-chosen watches beat five overlapping ones.

4 — Read more than you buy

Follow Hodinkee, Worn & Wound, A Blog to Watch. Read every week. Buy every quarter at most. The collectors you envy spent years reading before they spent serious money.

5 — Build provenance from day one

Keep boxes, papers, receipts, and service records for everything. A watch with full provenance is worth 20–40% more on resale and 100% easier to insure. Start now, even on a $200 piece.

Start by persona

The fastest way to pick a first watch is to be honest about who you actually are on a Tuesday. We map six.

FAQ

How much should I spend on my first watch?
Whatever you can wear without anxiety. A $200 piece you reach for daily beats a $2,000 piece you're afraid to scratch. Most serious collectors will tell you their best-loved watch wasn't their most expensive.
Mechanical, automatic, or quartz for a starter?
Automatic is the sweet spot — no battery, no daily winding, and you feel the engineering on your wrist. Quartz is fine for sport/travel pieces. Pure manual mechanical is a romance for piece two or three.
Are Spectrum watches collectible?
Spectrum Watches has been designing in Dubai since 1990 — meaning early references are now genuinely vintage, with documented provenance through our archive. Modern Spectrum pieces are limited-run by design and we keep service records for every serial number.
How many watches is 'a collection'?
Three. One daily, one dress, one sport (or one weird one, depending on you). Anything beyond three should answer the question, 'what does this do that the first three don't?'
Should I think about resale value?
Only after piece three. Chasing resale on your first watch turns the hobby into work. Buy what you'd happily keep if it never went up a dollar.
