Choosing Your First GMT Watch: A Buyer's Guide
A GMT is the explorer's watch. One extra hand, one extra time zone, and a dial that quietly says you have somewhere else to be. Here's what to look for before you buy your first one — and what to ignore.
What the fourth hand does
A standard hour hand laps the dial twice a day. A GMT hand laps it once — 24 hours, one rotation. Read it against the 24-hour scale on the dial or the bezel and you get a second time zone without doing arithmetic in an airport queue.
That's the whole trick. Everything else on the spec sheet is about how comfortably you can change those two readings.
True GMT vs caller GMT
True (flyer) GMT: the local hour hand jumps in one-hour steps. You land, click it forward three hours, done — the seconds never stop and home time stays put. This is what you want if you actually travel.
Caller GMT: the 24-hour hand is the adjustable one. Better if you stay in one city and track where your calls are — family in London, a supplier in Shenzhen.
How to set it, once
- Set the 24-hour hand to home time on the 24-hour scale.
- Set the main hour hand to wherever you are standing.
- Want a third zone? Rotate the bezel by the offset and read the 24-hour hand against it.
Bezel: fixed, rotating, or none
A bidirectional 24-hour rotating bezel buys you that third time zone and is the classic look. A fixed 24-hour bezel is cleaner and dressier but locks you to two zones. A GMT with no 24-hour scale at all is a styling exercise — skip it.
Sizing and legibility
GMT dials carry more information than most, so legibility beats fashion. 40–42mm with lug-to-lug under 50mm suits the majority of wrists. A contrasting GMT hand — a different colour from the hour and minute hands — matters more than any case material. Measure your wrist first.
What to spend
Between $300 and $900 you should get a sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance, a properly independent GMT function and a strap worth keeping. Below that, check whether the fourth hand can actually be set on its own — plenty of cheap "GMTs" simply drag it along with the hour hand.
